Turmeric: The Golden Ingredient Loved in Indian Cooking, Wellness and Skincare

Turmeric is one of those ingredients that has always been part of everyday life for me. It was, an still is a staple in our kitchen - added to curries, dals, rice dishes and home remedies passed down through generations.

Even now, when I refill my spice drawer, turmeric is always the messiest one to top up because it stains everything bright yellow! But it’s quickly forgiven because it’s such a loved and powerful ingredient with so many benefits for health, wellbeing, and skincare.

At Kushboo Wellness, we love using natural ingredients with meaning and history behind them, and turmeric is one we come back to again and again.

Turmeric in Indian Traditions & Ayurveda

Turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years, both in cooking and Ayurvedic wellness practices. In Ayurveda, turmeric is valued for helping to support balance within the body and is often associated with warmth, healing, and vitality.

It also plays an important role in Indian celebrations and skincare rituals. Traditionally, turmeric pastes were applied to brides before weddings to help brighten and soften the skin naturally. These rituals were not just about beauty, but also about self-care, wellbeing, and preparing for important moments with intention.

This connection between wellness and skincare is something that continues to inspire us at Kushboo.

The Health Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric contains a natural compound called curcumin, which is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Many people include turmeric in their diets because it may help support:

  • General wellbeing
  • Healthy digestion
  • Immune support
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Everyday wellness routines

Turmeric is commonly enjoyed in curries, soups, teas, and the increasingly popular golden milk drinks. Combined with black pepper, turmeric is believed to be absorbed more effectively by the body.

While turmeric has been treasured traditionally for centuries, modern research continues to explore its potential health benefits too.

Why Turmeric is Loved in Skincare

Turmeric has become increasingly popular in natural skincare, and for good reason.

Its antioxidant-rich properties can help protect the skin from environmental stress, while its soothing qualities may help calm redness and irritation. Turmeric is also loved for promoting a brighter-looking complexion and supporting healthy, glowing skin.

Because of its natural antibacterial properties, turmeric is often used in skincare for blemish-prone or reactive skin too.

At Kushboo, we combine turmeric with nourishing oils and botanicals to create products that feel comforting, luxurious, and naturally effective.

For me, turmeric is more than just a spice. It’s connected to family, cooking, tradition, wellness, and everyday rituals of care.

From Indian kitchens to modern natural skincare, turmeric continues to earn its place as one of the most loved ingredients for both body and mind - even if it does stain the kitchen counter now and then.
