What My Indian Parents Taught Me About Wellness Before It Was Trendy

Simple wellness habits, natural living and the family values that inspired Kushboo.

When I was growing up, my parents never talked about wellness.

In fact, I don't think I ever heard the word.

There were no fitness trackers, no wellness podcasts, no morning fitness routines and certainly no social media telling us how to live healthier lives.

Yet looking back, I realise they were teaching me wellness every single day.

At the time, I simply thought it was the way we lived.

Today, I realise they quietly gave me some of life's greatest lessons.

Wellness Was Simply Part of Everyday Life

We never owned a family car because neither of my parents drove.

As children, I thought we were missing out.

Now I realise we were gaining something far more valuable.

We walked everywhere.

School.

The shops.

Friends' houses.

Every evening after dinner, my late father would head out for a walk.

He wasn't trying to reach 10,000 steps.

He hadn't read about the benefits of walking after meals.

He simply enjoyed walking, and he continued that evening ritual for the rest of his life.

Today, research tells us that regular walking supports heart health, improves mood, reduces stress and contributes to healthy ageing.

My father never needed the science to tell him that.

Food Was More Than Just Food

Money wasn't always plentiful when I was growing up, but one thing my parents never compromised on was fresh food.

Our meals were always home cooked.

Fresh vegetables and fruit were a priority.

Dessert was usually fruit.

It wasn't considered unusual - it was simply what we ate.

Looking back, I realise how much that shaped my own thinking.

Sleep Wasn't Negotiable

One memory that still makes me smile is bedtime.

Even as teenagers and, if I'm honest, even as young adults - our parents expected us to be in bed around 9pm.

At the time, it felt unbelievably unfair!

Now?

I completely understand.

Today we know about circadian rhythms, sleep hygiene and the importance of quality rest.

My parents simply believed that a good night's sleep was one of the foundations of good health.

It's a habit I've carried with me throughout my own life, and even now sleep is my top priority and I try to be in bed early whenever I can.

Wellness Didn't Need A Name

As I look back now, it strikes me how many of today's wellness trends were simply everyday life in our home.

Walking.

Fresh food.

Home cooking.

Good sleep.

Time together as a family.

Keeping life simple.

We didn't call it wellness.

We simply called it life.

How Those Lessons Became Kushboo

Those quiet lessons didn't stay in my childhood.

They became part of who I am.

Over time, they've become woven into the very fabric of Kushboo and influence everything we do.

From the ingredients we carefully choose to our belief that wellness doesn't have to be complicated, so much of what we create can be traced back to those early family values.

We believe in simple, natural ingredients.

We believe in the power of everyday rituals.

We believe wellbeing doesn't need to be expensive or overwhelming.

Whether it's taking a walk, enjoying a warm bath, nourishing your skin naturally or simply slowing down for a few quiet moments, I've always believed that the smallest rituals often have the greatest impact.

Even today, I still hear my late father's voice in my head offering his quiet advice.

Those family values, shaped by our Indian heritage and a deep respect for nature, continue to guide me every single day.

Perhaps Wellness Hasn't Changed After All

Sometimes I wonder whether wellness has really changed very much over the years.

Perhaps we've simply given it a new language.

The older I get, the more grateful I become for the way I was brought up.

As children, we don't always appreciate the lessons our parents teach us.

It's only years later that we realise just how much those quiet, everyday moments shaped who we became.

Looking back, I realise I've simply spent my adult years sharing the values my parents quietly passed on to me.

And perhaps that's what Kushboo has always been about.

Not just natural skincare.

But helping people discover that wellness often begins with life's simplest moments.
