What My Sciatica Flare-Up Reminded Me About Wellness

This week, I experienced something many people will be familiar with: a sciatica flare-up.

As someone who has spent the last few years focusing on becoming stronger, fitter and healthier, my first reaction was frustration.

How could my body be complaining when I exercise regularly, stretch, walk and generally take care of myself?

But after a few days, I realised the situation was reminding me of an important lesson about wellness.

Wellness is not about perfection.

It's about resilience.

Wellness Doesn't Mean Nothing Ever Goes Wrong

One of the biggest misconceptions about health and wellbeing is that if we do everything "right", we won't experience discomfort, illness, stress or setbacks.

The reality is very different.

Bodies change.
Life happens.
Stress builds up.
Injuries occur.
Hormones fluctuate.
Aches and pains appear when we least expect them.

Good wellness habits don't make us immune to life's challenges.

What they do provide is a foundation that helps us respond better when challenges arise.

Returning to the Basics

When my sciatica flared up, I didn't look for a complicated solution.

Instead, I returned to simple practices that have supported me for years.

Gentle Daily Movement

One of the most helpful things for me was continuing to move.

Rather than avoiding activity altogether, I focused on gentle sciatica-focused yoga stretches and regular movement throughout the day.

Movement can help maintain mobility and prevent the body from becoming even stiffer through prolonged inactivity.

Taking Warm Salt Baths

A warm bath has always been one of my favourite wellness rituals.

This week, adding bath salts and taking time to soak in warm water became part of my daily routine.

More importantly, it forced me to slow down.

In a busy world, that pause can be just as valuable as the bath itself.

Listening to My Body

Perhaps the biggest lesson was learning to listen.

Many of us are conditioned to push through discomfort and carry on regardless.

Sometimes that is appropriate.

But sometimes our bodies are asking us to slow down, recover and give ourselves a little more care than usual.

Why Simple Wellness Habits Matter

The older I get, the more I appreciate simple wellness.

Not because it is trendy.

Not because it promises quick results.

But because it is sustainable.

Simple wellness might look like:

  • A short walk outdoors
  • Gentle stretching
  • A warm bath
  • A few minutes of deep breathing
  • Drinking more water
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Taking time away from screens

These habits are not glamorous, but they often form the foundation of long-term wellbeing.

Building Resilience Instead of Chasing Perfection

My sciatica flare-up reminded me that wellness is not about creating a perfect life.

It's about creating habits that support us when life becomes challenging.

The goal isn't to avoid every ache, pain or setback.

The goal is to build resilience, so we have the tools to navigate them when they arrive.

At Kushboo, that's something we believe deeply.

Whether it's a calming bath, a nourishing skincare ritual, or simply creating a moment of pause in a busy day, wellness often starts with the smallest acts of self-care.

This week, my body reminded me of that lesson.

And perhaps it's a reminder many of us need from time to time.

Simple Wellness Starts Here

If you're dealing with stress, fatigue, aches or simply feeling overwhelmed, start small.

Take a walk.

Stretch for five minutes.

Run a bath.

Slow down.

Because wellness isn't about perfection.

It's about taking care of yourself, one small step at a time.
