What Reaching Base Camp Taught Me About Recovery, Rest and Looking After Your Body

One year ago this week, I reached Everest Base Camp.

It still feels surreal to say that.

Because the truth is - I had never trekked before.
I only had 9 weeks to train.

But I made the decision anyway.

Within an hour of booking the trek, I joined a gym for the first time in my life.

And from that moment, everything changed.

You Don’t Have to Be Ready — You Just Have to Start

Looking back, I wasn’t fully prepared.

But I didn’t wait to feel ready. I just started.

Training wasn’t about doing everything perfectly - it was about small, consistent steps.

Showing up.
Pushing a little further each time.
Building strength slowly.

That’s what got me to Base Camp.

But there’s something else that played a huge role - something we don’t talk about enough.

Why Recovery Is Just as Important as Effort

As my training increased, so did the pressure on my body.

My muscles were working in ways they never had before. My legs were tired. My feet felt it the most.

And I quickly realised something important:

If I wanted to keep going, I couldn’t just push harder - I had to recover properly too.

Recovery wasn’t optional. It was essential.

What Happens to Your Body Without Proper Recovery

When we push our bodies without giving them time to restore, it can lead to:

  • Muscle fatigue and soreness
  • Reduced performance
  • Increased risk of injury
  • Mental burnout

Our muscles need time and care to repair and rebuild.

And often, it’s the simplest practices that make the biggest difference.

The Role of Muscle Soaks and Foot Soaks

During my training, and especially after long days, I turned to something simple:

muscle soaks in the bath and foot soaks at the end of the day.

These became a key part of my routine.

Not just for physical relief - but for recovery, relaxation, and reset.

A warm bath with natural salts helps to:

  • Ease muscle tension
  • Support circulation
  • Encourage relaxation
  • Reduce feelings of fatigue

Foot soaks, in particular, are incredibly powerful.

Our feet carry us all day, yet they’re often the most neglected part of the body.

Soaking them in warm water with natural salts can:

  • Relieve soreness
  • Improve circulation
  • Help the body unwind

Recovery Is Also About the Mind

What I didn’t expect was how much these moments helped mentally too.

After a long day of training, those few minutes in the bath or with my feet soaking weren’t just about muscles.

They were about slowing down.

Letting the body and mind catch up.

This is something we often miss in everyday life.

We push through busy days, long to-do lists, constant demands - without giving ourselves time to reset.

Why Simple Rituals Matter More Than We Think

You don’t need to be training for a trek to benefit from recovery.

Whether you’ve had a long day at work, been on your feet all day, or simply feel tired - your body still needs care.

Simple rituals, done consistently, can have a powerful impact:

  • A warm bath at the end of the day
  • A foot soak before bed
  • A few quiet minutes to pause

These small acts of care help restore balance - physically and mentally.

Bringing That Lesson Into Everyday Life

Reaching Base Camp taught me many things.

But one of the most important was this:

You can’t keep going without giving something back to your body.

Strength isn’t just built through effort.
It’s supported through rest and recovery.

And that’s something we can all bring into our daily lives - in simple, achievable ways.

Start Small. Recover Well. Keep Going.

You don’t need to climb a mountain to feel the benefits.

Start with something simple.

Take a moment at the end of your day.
Give your body time to restore.

Because when you look after your body properly, it allows you to keep showing up -  stronger, calmer, and more supported.
