Last week, we collaborated with a local women's walking group for a simple "walk and talk" event.
The idea was straightforward: spend some time outdoors, enjoy a gentle walk, and connect with other women.
We opened up a handful of spaces and they filled almost immediately.
What struck me most wasn't the walking itself.
It was the conversations.
Women of different ages, backgrounds and life experiences chatting as though they'd known each other for years. Some arrived knowing nobody. By the end of the walk, new friendships had begun to form.
It was a wonderful reminder that when we think about wellbeing, we often focus on what we do for ourselves - but one of the most powerful contributors to our health is something much simpler:
Connection.
Why Human Connection Matters for Wellbeing
When we think about wellness, we often think about healthy food, exercise, sleep, meditation, skincare or self-care rituals.
All of these things matter.
But research consistently shows that strong social connections are one of the biggest predictors of long-term wellbeing and happiness.
As humans, we are naturally social creatures.
We thrive when we feel seen, heard and connected to others.
A simple conversation can lift our mood.
A shared experience can reduce feelings of stress and loneliness.
Feeling part of a community can increase resilience during difficult times.
Connection isn't just good for our emotional wellbeing - it can support our physical health too.
The Benefits of Walking and Talking
One of the reasons walking groups have become so popular is that they combine two powerful wellbeing tools at the same time.
Movement and connection.
Walking is one of the most accessible forms of exercise available.
It can help:
- Support cardiovascular health
- Improve circulation
- Boost mood
- Increase energy levels
- Reduce stress
- Support healthy sleep patterns
When walking is combined with conversation, the benefits become even greater.
Many people find it easier to open up while walking side by side than sitting face to face.
The rhythm of walking naturally encourages conversation and helps people relax.
There is something incredibly powerful about moving your body while sharing stories, experiences and laughter.
Wellness Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
One thing I loved about the event was how simple it was.
No expensive equipment.
No complicated wellness routine.
No pressure.
Just a group of women walking together.
Sometimes we assume wellbeing requires major changes or elaborate routines.
But often the things that support us most are surprisingly simple:
- A walk outdoors
- A conversation with a friend
- Fresh air
- Laughter
- Feeling part of a community
- These small moments can have a huge impact on how we feel.
Why Community Is More Important Than Ever
Modern life can be incredibly busy.
Many of us spend our days rushing between work, family commitments, screens and responsibilities.
Despite being more connected digitally than ever before, many people report feeling isolated or disconnected.
This is why creating opportunities for genuine connection matters.
Whether that's joining a walking group, attending a local event, meeting a friend for coffee or simply striking up a conversation, these moments help us feel grounded and supported.
Connection reminds us that we're not doing life alone.
Bringing More Connection Into Your Life
The good news is that connection doesn't need to be complicated.
Start small.
Message a friend.
Invite someone for a walk.
Join a local group.
Attend an event that interests you.
Say yes to an opportunity you might normally talk yourself out of.
Small actions often lead to meaningful relationships.
A Simple Reminder
The walking event reminded me of something I think many of us need to hear:
Wellness isn't only about looking after yourself.
It's also about connecting with others.
Because sometimes the most powerful thing for our wellbeing isn't another product, another routine or another item on our to-do list.
Sometimes it's simply a conversation.
A shared laugh.
A walk with good company.
And a reminder that we're all walking this journey together.
