Why Grounding Matters More Than Ever

This week, I found myself watching my granddaughter Lila standing beside the large tree at the end of our garden.

She was gently touching the bark, looking closely at the leaves, completely absorbed in the moment. No distractions. No phone. No rushing. Just curiosity and calm.

As I watched her, it made me think about something we hear more and more about in the wellness world lately: grounding.

But the truth is, children already seem to understand grounding naturally.

They instinctively connect with nature. They slow down. They notice things. They use their senses fully. And somewhere along the way, many of us adults forget how to do that.

What Is Grounding?

Grounding is the practice of reconnecting with the earth and being fully present in your surroundings. For many people, grounding helps create feelings of calm, balance, clarity, and emotional wellbeing.

Grounding doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive.

It can simply be:

  • Walking barefoot on grass
  • Sitting in the garden
  • Touching a tree
  • Taking deep breaths outside
  • Listening to birdsong
  • Feeling sunlight on your skin
  • Slowing down long enough to notice your surroundings
  • In today’s busy world, many of us spend most of our time indoors, looking at screens, rushing from one task to another, and carrying constant stress in our nervous systems.

Sometimes the simplest wellness practices are the ones we need most.

Why Nature Helps Calm the Nervous System

Spending time in nature has long been connected to improved wellbeing and reduced stress levels. Many people notice they feel calmer, lighter, and more present after spending time outdoors.

I know I do.

The older I get, the more I realise that wellness is not always about doing more. Sometimes it’s about returning to simplicity.

Fresh air.
Stillness.
Natural rhythms.
Rest.
Quietness

These ideas were also deeply connected to my upbringing. Growing up in an Indian household, wellness was never treated as a trend. It was part of everyday life through oils, baths, herbs, spices, rest, scent, and connection to nature.

That slower, more grounded way of living is something I value even more now.

Small Grounding Rituals for Everyday Life

You don’t need a perfect routine to feel more grounded. Small moments throughout the day can make a real difference.

Here are a few simple grounding rituals you can try:

Step outside in the morning

Even five minutes of fresh air can help reset your mind and body.

Use calming natural scents

Essential oils like lavender, cedarwood, and peppermint can help create moments of calm and comfort at home.

Slow down your evening routine

A warm bath, bath salts, skincare ritual, or quiet cup of tea can help signal to your body that it’s safe to rest.

Spend time around trees and greenery

Nature has a calming effect that many of us underestimate.

Put your phone away for a little while

Creating small moments without constant stimulation can help reduce overwhelm.

Wellness Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that wellness doesn’t need to feel overwhelming.

It’s often found in the smallest moments:

  • A quiet walk
  • A calming scent
  • Warm water
  • Fresh air
  • A deep breath
  • Watching a child connect with nature

These are the moments that remind us to slow down and reconnect with ourselves again.

At Kushboo, this belief is at the heart of everything we create - natural products and gentle rituals designed to bring calm, comfort, and grounding into everyday life.

Because sometimes wellness begins with simply pausing long enough to notice the world around you.
